  • Tattoo – After Care

Tattoo After Care includes two aspects. First is to take care immediately after being tattooed.

Needles of tattooing machine lay ink deep into the skin which means a lot of tiny puncture wounds causing bleeding and pain. Under normal circumstances bleeding is not too much. Alcohol has a thinning effect on the blood and will produce a much greater amount of blood loss. So it is better to avoid drinks.

Generally tattooists use antiseptic ointment during tattooing which helps your skin stay healthy. After tattoo creation the artist wipes and cleans your tattoo, applies antiseptic ointment and then put soft tissue or cellophane on the area.

Good tattoo artists use antiseptic ointment as they work on your tattoo. They best know that this helps the skin stay healthy. When the tattoo is done, the artist should wipe your tattoo down, clean it and then apply antiseptic ointment. They will then put soft tissue or cellophane on the area.

If your tattoo is bandaged, leave it on for approximately two hours. Then wash it gently with luke-warm water using antibacterial soap. Simply pat it dry, do not rub. It may be done 3-4 times a day. To help the healing process avoid applying another bandage and allow it to be exposed to air. Wear clean and loose clothes

To keep tattoo area infection free keep the area dry for first few days, clean it every few hours and clean your hands before you touch or clean your tattoo. Also avoid swimming pools, the ocean, hot tubs or any other source of water until the tattoo is healed. Also avoid getting the new tattoo sunburned until it is healed. Avoid taking shower bath and soap for the first few days. At least don’t let the shower directly spray hard onto it.

In consultation with your tattooist you can apply very thin coats of Bacitracin or A&D ointment or a good quality antiseptic lotion for first 5-7 days to keep your tattoo healthy, clean and shiny. Don’t over apply. When ointment gets dry wipe it off and apply a new layer. Don’t rub/scratch the tattoo hard, because this can damage the healing process. A little bit of alcohol may relieve itching if any. If scabs are formed do not pick, let them fall off gradually. Ice packs can reduce swelling/redness. If slightest sign of infection appears consult a doctor.

The healing process may take 1-6 weeks or more depending on the size and complexity of you’re the design.

The second part covers keeping your tattoo fresh and vibrant. To stop your tattoo from sinking into dull wrinkles do the following

      - Keep it clean nourished and healthy. Apply gently good quality moisturizer to keep the skin soft and supple.

      - If you have your tattoo at head, hands or feet where lack of body fat under the skin can leave the skin vulnerable to dryness and cracking which is fatal to the life of your tattoo take care to get rid of this dryness with a quality moisturiser.

      - To keep its colors glowing protect it from ultra violet radiation using a good quality high SPF sun block (at least factor 30). Reapply it several times a day if your tattoo is exposed for a long time.

      - Don’t forget to reapply it after surfing/swimming. It is to be applied/reapplied regularly to protect these lovely blues and greens from fading to a non attractive monochrome blue-grey.
